5.1 Origin of Labor Day
Workers strike in Chicago, USA
The origin of May.1 Labor Day mainly stems from the workers' strike in Chicago, USA. On May 1, 1886, more than 200,000 workers in Chicago went on strike for an eight-hour working day. After a bloody and arduous struggle, they finally won a victory. To commemorate this workers' movement, in July 1889, the Second International led by Engels held a Congress in Paris, which passed a resolution to designate May 1 as International Labor Day. This decision immediately received a positive response from workers all over the world. From then on, working people all over the world gathered and marched every day to celebrate.
